...France for treatment, the strains in the French public-health system broke open as G.P.s, interns, hospital staff, midwives and nurses staged a series of national stoppages. Their grievances ranged from low wages and out-of-step professional fees to calls for the government to create new jobs to offset the effect of a 35-hour week. Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has so far given in to every group pressing pre-electoral pay claims. Teachers also seized the moment to stage a one-day national strike for shorter hours and more teaching posts...

Still, all that action won't yield results in time to offset the winter chill. Bills are piling up so fast in Chicago that 3,000 residential customers a week are pleading with Peoples Energy for an assistance or installment plan. Although preselling the television rights across Europe helped offset some of the loss, that belly-flop may come back to haunt the company if stations think twice about buying in the future. Intertainment is betting on a $500 million, 10-film deal with Hollywood producers Anne and Arnold Kopelson, who were responsible for Outbreak and The Fugitive, to keep its credibility alive...

...seater isn't as practical as the Prius. Measured against the 17 million cars and trucks sold yearly in the U.S., it is a modest beginning. A major obstacle: the price trade-off for being green. Savings at the pump--magnified by this year's gasoline-price jumps--are offset by the $20,000 cost of either car. That's several thousand dollars more than similar-size conventional models. If proposed federal tax incentives--pushed by an unusual alliance of automakers and environmentalists--ultimately pass, "there could be a hybrid in every garage," says Roland Hwang, a transportation expert with...
