Many teenagers already are dying. Figures on choking-game deaths remain sketchy - a lack of awareness among police means that cases often end up being classified as suicides. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta estimates that at least 82 people died from the activity between 1995 and 2007. But according to the Wisconsin-based campaign group Games Adolescents Shouldn't Play (GASP), as many as 1,000 young people die in the U.S. each year playing some variation of the game. In France, officials identified 17 deaths in 2009, but they suspect that many more go unreported...
...Entitled "Thrice Upon a Time: A Century of Story in the Art of the Philippines," the show - hung alongside a separate collection of modernist works on loan from the Ateneo Art Gallery in Manila - runs at the Singapore Art Museum until Jan. 31. Underscoring its importance to the Philippines' often battered image abroad, the show was opened by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo herself. In doing so, she was obliged to march briskly past one of the more cheeky exhibits: a bottled collection of pungent smells, including an essence of rotten eggs labeled PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT...
...Philippine landscapes and figures began to appear more prominently in the archipelago's art. "Amorsolo's project was to find an idealized Philippine landscape and form of female beauty," says Ahmad Mashadi, head of the National University of Singapore's art museum. The artist took his nationalistic mission seriously, often too seriously, dipping his brush deeply in bathos and nostalgia. Amorsolo's paintings were suffused with movement, but they could be earnest to the point of comedy. Though he produced some striking portraits, as well as a haunting landscape of Manila lying in smoky ruins after World War II, pastoral...
Still, that's a long way from the climate faced by many gay politicians in America. Opponents of gay candidates there often focus the race on sexuality - and have found that it wins them more votes. Jim Roth, former Oklahoma county commissioner and the state's first publicly elected gay official, says that in 2002, rivals wrongly claimed his partner had AIDS. In 2006, church groups, he says, passed out literature claiming he would "advance the homosexual agenda." In 2008, while running for a post to oversee the state's energy resources, he faced similar attacks and lost. "Their coordinated...
...process - not an illogical move, they note, in a world where terrorism and identity theft has become more commonplace. Perhaps, detractors say, but those French citizens born overseas or in France to foreign-born parents are facing a trial that their peers are not. While the latter group can often rely on the French state to check official records to prove their citizenship, people born in former French colonies to naturalized immigrant parents or to French families abroad are being subjected to a paper chase that often leads to dead ends. Many fear they may lose their French nationality altogether...
