...Line on the Horizon starts well. "I know a girl," Bono screams on the title track, thrusting us into the familiar cosmos of a U2 hit. There's the martial beat, the fickle female object of desire, the soaring inarticulateness - "Ohhhhhh/ Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh" - followed by the Edge chugga-chugga-chugging away on his guitar, chasing Bono up the scale note for note and yawp for yawp. It makes you giggle in amazement that the same old tricks keep generating new thrills...

...wicked little existential story with a fantastic lead role (Mike wrote the play as an independent study with mentor Adrienne Kennedy, award-winning playwright and Harvard professor) and I'm entirely curious as to how something so thoughtful on page will effectively reach an audience. Oooooh. Ohhhhhh. The buzz is hot, I thought. I approached Mike and played it cool and casually asked if he needed any help producing the play... And so the saga continues I'm finally on the inside. Then he set this raucous pastiche to a junkyard syncopation of washboards, cap pistols, Klaxon and bicycle horns, pie pans and garbage cans -- augmented by bird whistles, brays and tag lines from radio ads ("Super Suds!" "Bromo Seltzer!" "Beeeeee Ohhhhhh!") -- until the whole thing sounded the way Fibber McGee's closet clattered, the way a Tex Avery cartoon looks, the way Bart Simpson's mind works...
