Arrayed along the pipelines of Enron Oil & Gas in the American Southwest is a series of boxy monitors that transmit data about the flow of the company's precious fossil fuels. The telecommunications devices draw their power not from the fuels they monitor but from shiny panels that capture the energy of the sun. Are these solar-powered invaders of the oil patch the technological portents of a coming era? Or are they merely emblematic of the bit part solar has played thus far in the world's energy equation? No one knows for sure, but corporate investors, who have...
Farndon's oils evoke the same, mildly pleasant feelings, soothing and persuading viewers to luxuriate in his images of the ideal moment. Rarely does his subject venture beyond a ship yard or a wharf, a sun-drenched path or a perfectly motionless pond. Thick paint and broad strokes complete his portrayal of utter screnity through the heaviness and fixity of the surface texture of his canvases. Figures are rendered almost motionless, defined only by a few cursory passes of his brush, while those figures standing on a path or in a park as if on a stroll end up pasted...
Spanning about 70 years, Farndon's career saw the compilation of a fairly large corpus of work. He won numerous prizes for both oil and watercolor (mostly for his oils) and made the transition between four or five fairly distinct styles with varying degrees of success. Presumably early influences (Farndon eccentrically refused to date a single canvas) can be found in the late Romantics, as evidenced in some uneventful and rather unexciting landscapes which ended up relegated to the basement of Vose galleries...
...river of burning oil slicks that swept through the southern Egyptian town of Durunka has burned or drowned at least 478 people, including about 220 whose bodies remain buried under charred rubble. The disaster began when a train carrying oil derailed Wednesday and flood waters carried the fuel ignited by electric wires into the town of 22,000. Survivors spent much of the day criticizing the government for building an oil storage depot so near their homes; later, Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Sedki arrived, promising 500 Egyptian pounds ($150) to families of the dead and 25 pounds ($7.50) per displaced...
...huge fire, started after a bridge collapsed over oil pipelines during torrential rains at a government storage depot, surged through the village of Durunka, killing at least 200 people. The flaming petroleum, carried on flood waters 200 miles south of Cairo, was still burning out of control late this afternoon. A local member of Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party criticized the government for building the depot in a densely populated area...
