Needless to say, Powers annexed the 220 by a country mile in addition to the clean-cut victory over favored Bob Schaper of Brown in the 100. The only fly in the ointment as far as Power's performance was concerned was that George "Diesel" Gibbons was sick and unable to swim. It was Gibbons who nipped Powers in an exciting 440 two years ago to give the Bruins their only tank win over Harvard, and last year the same Mr. Gibbons decisioned Powers in another close quarter mile race...
Only fly in Benny's rich ointment last week was his difficulty in collaborating with Fred Allen in the radio promotion of Love Thy Neighbor. Allen is now a rival of Eddie Cantor, who is handled by the same agency that handles Benny. If Benny should team up with Allen on a show, it would obviously do Cantor no good. Consequently the agency would dearly love to squelch the feud it once promoted...
...course there's one fly in the ointment. It's a little tough that wealthy anonymous donors seldom seem to give large sums of money for more and better teachers to keep the tutorial system from dying on its feet. A fireproof and air-conditioned library, 55 by 120 feet and conforming with the prevailing architecture of the Yard, is much solider and more enduring than a new tutor. But perhaps we could get around that, and give each teacher a bronze plaque to wear around his neck, reading: "This man donated to Harvard by John Doe '87. Enter here...
...this optimistic ointment there was one fly, a major index which refused to conform: the figures for bank debits (checks drawn on deposit accounts). In 140 centres outside New York, these debits declined 14.3% during the last three weeks in July, a far more than seasonal recession. Such a drop in checks drawn must mean that fewer (or smaller) business transactions are being completed, that sales of goods and services have fallen off or that payment for them has been postponed...
