...Mobile phone service is patchy. It's hard for those in Houston to reach each other, or even call outside the storm area. My brother Matt, 34, has resorted to texting, which still seems to be working OK. All day, I've relayed messages to and from relatives in Houston. At first, they had no fixed idea of where to go. Flights out of the city's two airports had been cancelled by this morning, which meant they couldn't get here as planned. I spent the morning trying to find hotel rooms anywhere in the state for them...
...house with the camera, for the most part getting a reasonable connection to our Wi-Fi network (a router located in my home office). But when I took the P2 and laptop out to the deck to create a live slideshow there, the camera had an awful time. OK, so Wi-Fi can be tricky, but at the same deck table both an Apple PowerBook and an HP Pavilion notebook had no problems connecting to the Internet via the same wireless network...
...always does--call George Martin. Martin has retired from producing, but he remains the artistic Svengali in McCartney's life, and in a shrewd bit of psychology, he suggested Nigel Godrich as a possible producer. He is also known for expressing his opinions with the sweetness of barbed wire. "I met with him and said I'd do it," recalls Godrich. "But I said I didn't love...
...just the beginning of the downside. Worse is that this is far from easy to use. The buttons on the unit make very little sense, even to someone who's been around his fair share of electronic devices (ahem). There's four-button directional pad, but there's no "OK" button in the middle. It had Play/Pause and Stop, but it didn't have any clearly marked volume buttons nor anything clearly marked for fast-forwarding and rewinding. (To find these controls you have to push buttons at random, which can lead to unpleasant situations.) The AV 700's remote...
...Open, tennis spectators head for the big name matches at the new Arthur Ashe stadium, or the old Louis Armstrong stadium (Pops could really swing, but he had no net game). Tennis fans, on the other hand, head for the side courts, where the world?s greatest players-OK, so maybe they?re not the top seeds-are no farther than a drop shot away. The first day session at the Open is a fantastic place to see the amazing skill you need to play at this level, to catch youngsters on the way up-say, Roger Federer...
