...second was a show I had no enthusiasm for based on the premise: "Pasadena," a soap opera about a wealthy media family in Walnut Springs. (OK, Pasadena.) But expecting "Titans," I saw a moody, dark, seemingly intelligent piece that could be a more commercial descendent of past moody Fox dramas like "Profit." An additional encouraging sign: the creator turns out to be Mike White, the writer and creepy star of last summer's haunting "Chuck and Buck." (Also a former "Freaks and Geeks" writer, which with Apatow makes two "F&G" alums - always a good sign for a fall schedule...
...OK. Back to the big picture...
...OK. We knew this wasn't going to be "Sopranos"-dense. And the cheese, especially in Probstian form, is part of the charm. At best, it's very good television and at its worst it's gloriously bad, and, well, there's nothing else good on anyway. And while the ratings have settled, the show is clearly a juggernaut made to run a long time. As Colby said, "I don't care how many Survivors you have, you'll never be able to predict the winner" - the business model is sound...
...network execs blithely assumed that they didn't have much to lose in a strike, they're fooling themselves. (OK, so they probably are.) Even with the short-term bump in the networks' ratings compared with cable that followed "Millionaire," the overall trend is not in favor of the networks, which have steadily lost share to the rest of the zillion-channel universe, with no reason to expect to gain much back...
...work next week, and the primary order of business is finalizing that tax cut and the budget that goes around it. Bush knows by now that in days 100-200, he's not going to get exactly what he wanted - so why not start saying now that that's OK with...
