History Unearthed I'm surprised you fell for a 3,000-year-old propaganda trick by assuming that the "City of David" was founded by King David [Feb. 8]. It was not; he only conquered it, even the Bible tells us so (2 Samuel 5: 6-9; Joshua 15: 63). Strangely, the last paragraph refers to the city's 6,000-year history and even explicitly mentions the Jebusites who were there before David. That's a bit inconsistent with a founding date of 1,000 B.C. Michael Scharl, VIENNA

...resolve that? You have talked of a "highest common factor" and not a "lowest common denominator." How do you ensure higher ideals? My job is to move the policy on. Not just for the E.U., but other parts of the world. There is the old idea, which still resonates, that you support the ideals you hold. Not to impose, but to help with issues like nation building. To do that, we should be ambitious. There is no lack of ambition in the Foreign Affairs Council. I have to do it within the constraints of needing to build a consensus...

...grumbles that the Obama Administration is ignoring Europe. Do you feel that? Not at all. I've just come back from a very long and very good meeting with Secretary of State Clinton in Washington. We've met three times, and often speak on the phone. And as an old parliamentarian, I'm always anxious to go to Capitol Hill when I am in Washington. We knew there was an issue for the President for timing, but he will be coming to Portugal for the NATO at the end of year. (See pictures from Obama's overseas trips...

...leadership is targeting domestic consumption as the most enduring driver of economic growth. Not only are there more Chinese with money to spend, the still fragile state of the global economy makes self-reliance an imperative. "As we stand at a new historical juncture, we must change the old way of inefficient growth and transform the current development model," Vice Premier Li Keqiang, the likely successor to Premier Wen Jiabao, declared at Davos in January...

...underdog stories. At the 2008 Beijing Games, one of the most memorable was not on the track but in the boardroom of a Chinese sportswear company named after its founder, Li Ning - a triple gymnastics gold medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. While the then 18-year-old firm wasn't an official sponsor, it used careful planning to outflank its deep-pocketed overseas rivals by picking likely medalists to outfit with Li Ning - branded gear (official sponsor Adidas had the rights to provide uniforms for medal and other ceremonies, but athletes were free to choose their own competition...
