Other stars, hearing this, scarcely look up. They are too busy making their own commercials. In the olden days-that is, in the earlier 1950s-the idea of an established star's barking on TV for a commercial product was unthinkable. Now Barbara Stanwyck, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Taylor, Claudette Colbert and Edward G. Robinson all appear for Maxwell House, too-but only for $50,000 apiece. You can hear Robinson clearly enough, as he looks toughly over the brew and snarls...

Berger solemnly declares that Crabb was "either the most neglected hero in the history of this country or a liar of insane proportions." Typical is Crabb's meeting with Wyatt Earp...

Sacred Grubs. Among the ceremonials may be the re-enacting of their legend of creation. In olden times, the Asmat believe, a great magician wandered through their country. He was alone, and when he began to long for company, he carved wooden figures and set them up in a forest glade. Then he beat on a drum, and the statues came to life to keep him cornpany. Even today, the Asmat carve figures, as the old magician did, and drum them to new "life...

...olden times, the Brattle had a recording of the 1812 Overture, which was at least close to the proper emotions for a Bogey festival, but this fall, the horns will sound the spaces between the theatre's showings of Hiroshima Mon Amour, Black Orpheus, and even Can-Can. Variety is required: for the first of these three, Norman Dello Joio's Air Power Suite would no doubt suffice; a few bar's of Gluck might enliven the second; and Offenbach is the only answer for the third. Certainly other suggestions are possible, but continuing the present entr' acte offerings...
