S. was brought almost to the verge of civil war by the dispute as to whether Samuel J. Tilden (Democrat) or Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican) had secured sufficient votes to elect him to the presidency. The House and Senate chose a Commission of seven Democrats and eight Republicans to adjudicate this matter. ...collection of English caricatures is now on display in the show cases of the Widener Library. Most of these caricatures are on political subjects and were first published somewhat over a century ago. The oldest of those being exhibited is one of St. George and the Dragon published in 1782. Among the most interesting of the others is one of seven original drawings which were made for Punch by John Leech from 1845-1859.
