...Burger court is the second oldest in history, with an average age of 70, less than two years younger than the Nine Old Men who made Franklin Roosevelt miserable until they began leaving the court in 1937. The present high bench is "the first ever to have a majority of its members 76 or over," calculates Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe. Even the younger Justices have reached the outer edges of middle age. The youngest, Sandra Day O'Connor, celebrated her 55th birthday last week...

...that he is thinking about quitting. Court watchers have been noting for years that Thurgood Marshall, 76, is in poor physical shape, but he has remarked privately, "I was appointed for life and intend to serve out my term." Also dug from the cave: basket and box fragments made of woven rushes waterproofed with asphalt, delicate thumbnail- size human heads and a rodent figurine, carved wood and bone tools, clay, stone and wooden beads and a human skull adorned with asphalt. Perhaps most remarkable...

Germany's Oriental romance, however, ends in ironic political tragedy. The coining of "Indo-European" in 1813 is viewed as Europe's usurpation of India's birthright for use as a political weapon. Schopenhauer's mythical India, by displacing the Semitic tradition as the oldest known to the west, is said to have caused its fall from veneration into disfavor, eventually leading to Gobineau's Inequality of the Races and the creed of Aryan supremacy...
