Happily, most of Horn's eccentric machines aren't so overblown as this. The image of sex-as-mechanism is one of the oldest tropes in modern art. A century has passed since Joris-Karl Huysmans, the "decadent" novelist, invited the reader to see the workings of an engine as "steel Romeos inside cast-iron Juliets"; the idea of a "desiring machine" has been explored by a lot of art since then, from early Picabia and Duchamp's The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass), through the Surrealists in the '30s, and so down...
...knives hardly ever stuck, Clinton said, but the friendship did. The President brought his oldest friend, who was also his wife's colleague at the Rose law firm, to Washington with him. One of Little Rock's most brilliant litigators, Foster was trusted by the Clintons, says Arkansas lawyer Joe Purvis, "not just for one or two projects, but leaned on in almost every facet" of their lives. As deputy in the counsel's office, he was among those who attracted much of the criticism in the early days of the Administration over insufficiently vetting nominees and the abrupt firing...
Archaeologists digging in southeastern Turkey have unearthed what appears to be the oldest piece of cloth ever found. The partly fossilized swatch measures 1 1/2 in. by 3 in., and was wrapped around the handle of a tool made from an antler. It's presumed to be linen, and it has been dated to about 7000 B.C., making it at least 500 years older than any other cloth previously discovered...
That left Chavis, the 45-year-old head of the United Church of Christ's Commission for Racial Justice, as the fallback choice to revive the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Before that he had been best- known as the leader of the Wilmington 10, a band of activists imprisoned for burning down a grocery store and conspiring to shoot at policemen during a 1971 civil rights protest in North Carolina. The convictions were thrown out by a federal judge in 1980 on the grounds that the testimony of prosecution witnesses had been coerced by police...
...York Post, America's oldest continuously published daily, is apparently out of business; provisional publisher Rupert Murdoch dropped his bid to buy the tabloid after he and the unions failed to agree on cost cuts. The Saturday edition of the paper was canceled, and staff members started cleaning out their desks. The unprofitable paper's fate was left in the hands of a bankruptcy court this week, but plausible new buyers seemed unlikely to appear...
