...inertial reference "platform" that tells astronauts where they are in space, where they are headed and how fast. But how could they be sure that it would work?, the NASA brass wanted to know. "I told them I'd go along and run it myself," recalls Draper. The on-board navigation systems have proved so accurate that, if they had to, the crew of Columbia could fly to the moon and back without help from ground controllers...

...being carefully watched by his subordinates. There were reports that in recent weeks Liao had cautiously begun attempts to make contacts with American intelligence, with a view to escaping. Adding to his concern was the impending arrival of a Chinese freighter in Rotterdam: the embassy had scheduled an on-board party, and Liao feared that, if he attended, he would not be allowed to go back ashore. After spending $20 million to develop a miniaturized on-board TV camera for the Apollo spacecraft and equip tracking stations to receive its signals, NASA officials last month decided to limit its use to only two brief transmissions - one during the third manned orbital flight, the other while astronauts are actually walking on the surface of the moon. NASA's official reason for the curtailed use of in-flight TV was that the camera (which weighs only 71 Ibs.) pushed Apollo too close to its weight limitations...

...orbit, the nose cone was jettisoned and the adapter's four panels slowly opened like the petals of a flower, exposing LM to its natural environment: the vacuum of space, in which it can fly as efficiently as a streamlined rocket. Then, on command from LM's on-board computer, the craft briefly fired its 100-lb.-thrust attitude-control rockets, detaching itself from the adapter base and settling into its own orbit...

...withstand such heat, the nylon outer covering of the Apollo suit has been replaced by Beta cloth-an advanced form of glass fiber produced by Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. Backing up the new fabric are 14 layers of fire-resistant material. Even if they were caught in an on-board inferno, the Apollo astronauts would have several minutes of protection while wearing the new suit. Big gest problem posed by the new fiber is its susceptibility to wear. For protection, the new Apollo suits are patched with tough metallic-fiber cloth at the elbows, shoulders and back...
