Papua is only one-fourth of the island of New Guinea, but it is the most important part of that eerie, partially explored island. For the first time since they landed there last February, it seemed that the Japs might have to look to the defense of their bases, Lae and Salamaua, 150-odd miles northwest of Buna. If MacArthur could take Lae and Salamaua, New Guinea would be lost to the Japs. Already Australian Commandos were harassing the two bases, working in the dead of night with their knives and tommy guns...

Buffoon Manufacturer. In Wisconsin, ten candidates for Governor in all four parties-Democrat, Republican, Progressive and Socialist-campaigned against Republican Governor Julius P. ("The Just") Heil, hoping to capitalize on Heil's buffoonery and isolationist leanings. They lambasted him for failure to spend more than one-fourth of his time on his Governor's duties, for neglecting to call a special session of the legislature to vote funds for civilian defense. Governor Heil, who has made a big success as a manufacturer of everything from oil burners to snowplows (and is proud of it), ignored his critics, boasted...

Nor will it close the "inflationary gap"-between purchasing power and available civilian goods -that threatens the U.S. cost of living. President Roosevelt has estimated this year's spread at $20,000,000,000. If the inflationary gap is to be closed, more bonds will have to be bought-voluntarily or otherwise-or still bigger, meaner and tougher tax bills lie ahead...

...used in the U.S. has been imported from Peru and Southwest Africa. Now vanadium can be extracted from Idaho phosphate deposits. Hitherto this has been impracticable because Idaho's 6,000,000,000 tons of phosphate rock contain only 500,000 tons of vanadium, a mere one-tenth to one-fourth of one per cent vanadium. This concentration would be too low for practicable extraction, were it not for the fact that Anaconda Copper Co. is already processing over 100,000 tons of phosphates a year as fertilizer. From this tonnage some 200 to 250 tons of vanadium...
