...One of the perks of one-man rule is picking your national holidays. Libya's Col. Muammar Gaddafi has invented a few fêtes for his North African nation since seizing power in a 1969 coup. Three years ago, during stalled negotiations with Italy over reparations for Rome's colonial rule in Libya, he added another: Oct. 7 became "Vendetta Against Italians...

...Sporting events are about more than just center stage, however, and questions about China's continuing political repression festered on the sidelines. Throughout the Games, stories trickled out about jailed dissidents, banned websites and curiously empty designated protest zones. And, as if acting out a one-man play on the perils of overtraining and stifling national pressure, star hurdler Liu Xiang, the face of China's Olympics, arrived in the Bird's Nest to run his first qualifying race - then turned his back to the crowd and limped off the track. (This Anderson, a Brit, is not ever to be confused with the U.S.-bred, high-art fave Paul Thomas Anderson, of There Will Be Blood renown). But the movie is less a one-man show than a highly complex, finely tuned product, manufactured by an army of geek specialists and cyber-grease monkeys. What Death Race loses in soul - which would be extraneous baggage in an effort like this - it gains in group ingenuity...

...stage - and questions about China's continuing political repression festered on the sidelines. Throughout the Games, stories trickled out of jailed dissidents, banned websites and curiously empty protest zones. Then, as though summoned by some kind of karmic force, the Olympics produced a parable for the Chinese. Like a one-man play on the perils of over-training and stifling national pressure, China's star hurdler Liu Xiang arrived in the Bird's Nest to run his first qualifying race - and then decided that it was all too much. The athlete who was supposed to be the face of China...
