...once was. Although the massive, gingerbread homes of the opulent are still there, tourism and riotous jazz festivals have distorted the old style and spirit. Yet, among the get-away-from-it-all homes that Jackie and Jack Kennedy have used since he became President (Virginia's Glen Ora. Papa Joe Kennedy's Palm Beach mansion, and the Hyannisport complex), Newport has special meaning. It was on the green-lawned, Angus-stocked, 97-acre Hammersmith Farm, owned by her stepfather and mother, Hugh and Janet Auchincloss, that Jackie spent her youthful summers. It was in the rambling...
Estateliest of the Kennedy homes is Jack and Jackie Kennedy's rented, 14-room French Provincial winter weekend retreat, Glen Ora. in Virginia's tweedy hunt country. Built in 1810. Glen Ora is decorated in manored elegance: Louis XV and Regency chairs in the drawing room, a Duncan Phyfe table and Hepplewhite chairs in the dining room. The President's bedroom is off-white with a three-quarter mahogany sleigh bed, a mahogany bureau, and a red and white slipcovered lounge chair; Jackie's bedroom has twin beds, a French desk, and is papered...

Beer's increasingly eccentric behavior worried the secret police, and their shadowing of him paid off when Beer met privately with a known Communist agent. A search...
Peace Corps Project. The Secret Service have had little trouble with sightseers. So far. the road past Glen Ora has been a mess. It's better now, and last Sunday there was quite a caravan, led by a woman driver who got past the gatehouse, followed by about ten other cars. She was stopped, naturally, and everybody had to start backing (the country road past the entrance to Glen Ora is definitely one way). The tourist approach will probably change as the weather improves. Virginia's Historic Garden Week and the Middleburg Races in April bring a flush...
