...synthesizer is a gambler's instrument. It lures musicians with its gaudy array of textures and noises, but it can also deaden their performances. Sometimes, only sometimes, the gamble pays off. William Orbit's Pieces in a Modern Style, a collection of synthesizer arrangements of pieces by classical greats ranging from Vivaldi to Satie, is a case in point. When Orbit, Madonna's producer, sticks close to the composers' arrangements and instrumentation, as he does on Barber's "Adagio for Strings," the songs don't profit from the synthesizer's virtues and still suffer its vices. ...dreamers. Barreling through the desert, they come in search of the cheap thrill, the easy score, the fast women, the sugar daddies. On their final approach, they can already begin to make out the pale halo of the city's lights--lights that can be seen from outer orbit, against the dark face of a planet couched in the shadow of night. ...Madonna's quite gracious rendition of Don McLean's "American Pie." Everett, in typical gay-best-friend fashion, supports Madonna on backup vocals, a quite painful realization but no detriment to the song. Echoes of Madonna's most recent techno mantra style is quite clear, and William Orbit's synthesizer gets more than its fair share of song time, behind Madonna's vocals. Actually, the techno beat added to McLean's rather folksy song has, shall we say, a dollop more henna than is quite necessary, but it will make for a lovely video. Still, the sensual quality...
