However, the true stars of Candide were undoubtedly the orchestra members. From the opening notes to the final flourishes, the orchestra hardly faltered and did justice to Bernstein’s inspired score. The violinists, led by concertmaster Ian K. Goh ’06, were pure and lovely. Similarly, the woodwinds, brass, and keyboard were simply heavenly, and the percussion section was duly percussive. Conductor and Musical Director Daniel W. Chetel ’06, who waved vigorously to coax such beautiful music from both the orchestra and the vocalists, deserves praise on the fruits of his efforts...
...Louis Symphony refused to pick up their instruments after their contract expired. Then last week, after the National Labor Relations Board ruled that the stoppage was an illegal strike, the musicians and management finally agreed on a new 3 1/2-year contract, to be ratified by the orchestra this week. Philadelphia Orchestra management once referred...

The agreement was reached late Thursday night with the assistance of federal mediator Charles Fuchs, after the cancellation of 18 concerts drew national attention to the orchestra's first strike since 1979. Founded in 1880, the orchestra is one of the oldest symphonies in the country and has won six Grammy awards...
...Money was at the heart of the dispute; while musicians at many other top orchestras earn more than $100,000 in base salary, the St. Louis musicians had earned $73,180 in base pay prior to the new agreement. The orchestra's musicians will vote Saturday morning on final approval of the new contract, with official ratification expected March...
