...Werner Herzog - who made great movies in the '70s, and whose oneiric documentaries landed him on this year's TIME 100 list - says he never saw the Ferrara film, and simply worked from a script by William Finkelstein, who's written more than 100 episodes of cop shows (Law & Order, NYPD Blue, Brooklyn South, Cop Rock). Anyway, McDonagh is a good lieutenant: during Hurricane Katrina, he dove into the floodwaters to save a drowning prisoner; and for his efforts got severe back pains and an addiction to prescription drugs. Besides, McDonagh's visions are reptilian: an alligator on the highway...

...desperate vulnerability. Given the subject matter, it is somewhat surprising that the movie shows a knack for perfectly timed humor. Some of Eckhart’s best scenes involve him stealing his old pet parrot from his in-laws and then imitating the movements of the bird in order to inspire it to fly away free. In fact, it sounds a little like Muse took their nine favorite songs from the recording session, threw them together in no particular order and called it a day. “Uprising,” “Undisclosed Desires” and “Exogenesis Symphony” alone might make a five-star EP—just don’t be surprised if you find yourself fast-forwarding through...

...Rudd government is equally adamant that the increasing numbers of refugees reflect international trends, not lax policy. "Countries like the U.S., the U.K., Canada and Italy are all facing increased numbers of asylum-seekers, much more in the order of tens of thousands than those we are seeing," Immigration Minister Chris Evans told the Senate in Canberra on Sept. 14. The government is striving to curb human smugglers by improving ties with law-enforcement agencies and border guards in Asian transit countries. On Sept. 15, Evans also announced that Australia has pledged $15.5 million to the U.N. Office on Drugs...
