Until now, such after-market auto modifications were the exclusive purview of fearless do-it-yourselfers (check out their work at EV Album or CalCars). But now many car dealers and repair shops will do the job for you - and consumers are lining up. Typically customers order the kits directly from one of a handful of makers, who in turn ship the components to an installer near you. At least for now, an after-market conversion is the only option if you really want to rev up your fuel economy - short of ditching your car altogether and plunking down...

...Avuncular as ever, still smiling at his own jokes, Lieberman's 20-minute plea followed a folksy, flag-waving address by former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee. The big man with the muddy drawl, perhaps more famous for his "Law & Order" re-runs than for his legislative career, treated the delegates and guests to a populist paean to his pal McCain and his running mate, Gov. In an interview with TIME, Saakashvili said he ordered his troops to attack the South Ossetian city of Tskhinvali only after Russia launched its invasion into Georgian territory; his professed aim was to slow Russia's advance by 48 hours in order to give the international community time to act. But on the night of Aug. 7, and for three to four days afterward, Georgian officials did not say that Russia had launched its invasion first but only that their forces were responding to stepped-up attacks...
