Some folks just can't get along. There, in a grocery store in suburban Portland, Ore., was cashier Tom Morgan, more or less minding his own business. And there also was cashier Randy Maresh, who seemed to delight in tormenting Morgan. At length Morgan got fed up, hired a lawyer and sued Maresh for $100,000 in damages. The complaint: Maresh "willfully and maliciously inflicted severe mental stress and humiliation . . . by continually, intentionally and repeatedly passing gas directed at the plaintiff." Afrocentrism, a cult within the multicultural movement, displays some distressing signs of authoritarianism. A series of "baseline" essays, commissioned by the Portland, Ore., school district as a reference for teachers and now in widespread use elsewhere, contains some sweeping assertions: "Black literature is manipulated and controlled by white editors and publishers." Said Chris Wackman, Subaru vice president of marketing: "Consumers are looking for qualities like safety, affordability and rugged performance, all of the things that Subaru represents. We've always been called bulletproof...
...Chicago dispute is not the first time the N.R.A. has attacked such gun bans. A similar measure in Portland, Ore., was defeated in 1988 when both the state attorney general and the N.R.A. objected. When a federal judge upheld a Richmond ban on guns in public housing last December, N.R.A. lobbyists swung into action; in April the state legislature outlawed such restrictions...
