...Thank God for a bad haircut," says Greg Kinnear, 32, of his good fortune. But Sabrina was lucky too. Kinnear, host of NBC's Later and, before that, the E! channel's Talk Soup, swipes his scenes from Hollywood belle du jour Julia Ormond and nearly matches Harrison Ford for easy radiance. In his first major film role, Kinnear seems comfy-cozy on the big screen, humanizing a character--Ford's playboy brother--who could easily be a thin, tennis-anyone anachronism. "He has a lot of charm," says Sydney Pollack, who first sought Tom Cruise for the role...
...history: as a successful Broadway play, then as a Billy Wilder movie starring three beloved figures, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. And, as you'll recall, it has a nice little story to tell too. It's the one about the chauffeur's daughter (Julia Ormond), living over the garage on a vast Long Island estate, in love since childhood with David (Greg Kinnear), the playboy living up the driveway. When she grows up and he notices her, that threatens his engagement, which in turn threatens the merger of two family firms that Linus (Harrison Ford), his older...
...work as well now as it did in the '50s; Cinderella stories don't date any more than Jane Austen stories do. And the new acting team isn't half bad. Ford's muttering misanthropy may actually be funnier than Bogart's harder, more sardonic take on Linus. Ormond is no Audrey Hepburn, but Hepburn was sui generis, and Ormond does have a shy charm all her own. And there is a wastrely weakness about Kinnear's good looks that suits David more neatly than Holden's square-cut handsomeness...
...wanted to meet me," says GREG KINNEAR, "I assumed he probably wanted me to come by and wax his car." In fact, the director wanted Kinnear--host of Later, NBC's post-Conan O'Brien talk show-to co-star in a remake ofSabrina, alongside HARRISON FORD and JULIA ORMOND. "I was disappointed when I found out he wasn't considering me for the part of Sabrina," Kinnear says of his first film role. "But hey, you take your lumps in show biz." Returning to earth--and Later--doesn't seem to have had a dampening effect on his confidence.Although...
RICHARD GERE'S LANCELOT IS A cheeky existentialist. Julia Ormond's Guinevere is all up-to-date feminist spunk. Sean Connery's King Arthur is a leader for the Clinton era, well-meaning, essentially temporizing, as he impotently watches a great dream dwindle...
