...sign of serious spiritual decay, a Harvard education ranks right down there between nymphomania and a marked distaste for fish. It's not that Harvard is so evil, of course--it's just that Georgetown, Fordham, Holy Cross, St. John's and Notre Dame are so, well, orthodox. Maybe if Derek Bok became a Jesuit and Joe Restic started giving locker-room speeches like Pat O'Brien things would be different. But for now, almost every Catholic high school senior unavoidably learns that the path to the Ivy League is fraught with genuine spiritual peril...

...know who Rosa Luxembourg is? If you do, a friend of mine will buy you an ice cream cone. If not, Elzbieta Ettinger-Chodakouska will enlighten you about this early 20th century orthodox marxist. The Hanafis consider themselves more orthodox than the Black Muslims, now called Bilalians, whom they dismiss as political exploiters. The most famous Hanafi convert is Los Angeles Laker Basketball Star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who financed the purchase of a Washington house as Hanafi headquarters...

Nonetheless, Chiang Ch'ing immediately set about to join the small and weak local Communist Party. Leftist art circles were dominated, among others, by future Cultural Commissar Chou Yang, an orthodox party functionary. (Chou was eventually purged in the Cultural Revolution.) Chou and his coterie, Chiang Ch'ing recalled with great bitterness, kept her on the edges of the Communist organization during her four years in Shanghai. She never became a member of the secret inner-party circle. For a while the party placed her in a job as a night school instructor in a Y.W.C.A. literacy program...
