But it should allow a wider variety of movies in a category that has, over the past decade or so, been hijacked by "worthy," mostly unpopular films that don't come close to representing the technical and storytelling savvy that modern Hollywood artisans are so very good at. In other words, an action film like The Dark Knight. In other words, a Pixar feature like WALL-E. If today's announcement did anything concrete, it certified a Big Picture nomination...

...doesn't: which films placed six to 10 in the Best Picture voting this past year. If the lower five slots had all gone to artsy fare like Doubt and Revolutionary Road, you can be sure we wouldn't have heard today's announcement. So the Academy must want Oscar night to be moderately reflective of the movies that real audiences came to, saw and were conquered by. It won't be the People's Choice Awards, but it won't be the Independent Spirit Awards either. And for that we can be guardedly grateful...

...script, written by Brian Helgeland, who won an Oscar for his L.A. Confidential, does try to put a stethoscope to the current national malaise when it alludes, toward the end, to the toxic duplicity of insider trading. There's also a superrich mayor (James Gandolfini) who could be Michael Bloomberg with a bigger gut. But most of the film takes place in a fantasy present, where the Dow is at 11,000 - a relic of that halcyon era of 2008, when the movie was shot. And by emphasizing the cop-killer relationship, the picture loses the original's busy fresco...
