...Genres. Would 3-D be a help or a hindrance to more intimate films - to the buddy comedies that are among the most reliable of Hollywood moneymakers, or to those prestige dramas, the high-minded equivalent of TV movies, that keep getting nominated for the Best Picture Oscar? These films don't want to establish a hyper-reality, just a familiar reality that brings the viewer immediately into the lives of their characters. Paul Blart, or the kids from Slumdog Millionaire, would not have benefitted from the in-your-lap urgency...
...This is not to say that Pixar movies are inevitably superior to the DreamWorks stuff - though Oscar voters seem to think so. Eight years ago, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences established an award for Best Animated Feature, DreamWorks got the first one, for Shrek. Since then, Katzenberg's homegrown product has been shut out (the studio distributed Nick Park's veddy English Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit), while Pixar has won four: Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and WALL-E. More than 6 million people mini-blog about their lives on Twitter, including a surprising number of celebrities. Sean (Diddy) Combs recently Twittered about a tantric sex session, a 48-hour juice fast and taking a bubble bath with an Oscar statue. John Cleese has written about his pet chickens, while MC Hammer has mused on the economy ("We just fed the nation 15 [years] of evil soup. Now we're throwing up"). Other celebrities, including Shaquille O'Neal, post actual information about where they are and what they're doing. And they encourage fans to meet them...
...predictable recipe for indie flick humor. The biohazard removal business shines as a beacon of hope for the film’s lovable, but not particularly successful, sisterly duo. Adams plays a once-popular cheerleader having an affair with her married ex-quarterback, ex-boyfriend Mac (Steve Zahn). Their son Oscar (Jason Spevack) is in desperate need of expensive, individualized private school enrollment thanks to his habit of licking walls at his current public school. Norah has even less to look forward to in the morning. In the words of her sister, “You don?...
