Some of the protesters merely object to the abuses of infant baptism, but oth ers go much farther, saying that baptism is only meaningful when the in dividual involved understands the significance of the ritual-a viewpoint that has lately been adopted by a number of other Protestant and even Catholic thinkers. In the Roman Catholic Church -which requires parents to have their children baptized as soon as possible-several progressive theologians have seriously suggested that the ceremony be postponed until puberty, when a youth presumably is mature enough to accept or reject his faith. While many of the old C.I.O. unions have indicated that they will stay with Meany, the 1.9 million-member Teamsters Union, read out of the A.F.L.-C.I.O. in 1957 for refusing to answer charges of corruption, the International Chemical Workers Union and some oth ers might join up if Reuther sounded the call. Connotation of Coke. In addition to such new words, there are some 200 oth ers that now have different usages and meanings in each half of the divided country. The standard West German phrases for worker and employer - Arbeiter and Arbeitgeber - are never used in East Germany. There, all workers are now called Werktdtige - work-active persons. The East Germans have also dropped the use of the term Pro- letariat, because intellectuals and white-collar workers felt left out. Rationelle Arbeit, which means rational work in West Germany, has become East Germany's pet euphemism for work per formed...
