...George T. Gregg of Pittsburgh, is the best U. S. golfer over the age of 55. This he proved last week by scoring 156 for two rounds at Apawamis (Rye, N. Y.), in the tournament of the U. S. Senior Golf Association. Then he proceeded with oldster colleagues to Ottawa; Canada, and won a tournament of the Canadian Seniors' Golf Association, a one-round medal event for a cup presented by the U. S. seniors.* His card was 77, two strokes better than Charles D. Cooke of Arcola, N. Y. Veteran tennis players appeared last week on the courts...
...Canadian protest against what is claimed to be the Mother Country's policy of turning her daughter Dominion into a dumping ground for loafers. It was to patch up the Empire's mother-daughter quarrel that big, likable, keen-witted James Henry ("Jim") Thomas arrived in Ottawa last week from London, where he is Lord Privy Seal, Leader of the House of Lords, and Minister in Charge of Unemployment...
Reduced to essentials the argument understood to have been presented by Mr. Thomas at Ottawa last week may be stated thus: 1) Canada is smarting today at the certainty that she will lose much of her export trade to the U. S. when the new higher tariff bill is passed at Washington (see p. 13); 2) Canadian newspapers are clamoring that the Dominion should retaliate by raising her tariff on goods which the U. S. is anxious to sell to Canada; 3) Canada has been importing every year some 50 million dollars worth of U. S. coal; 4) If Canada...
Hard words wash across the Canadian border into the U. S. in the wake of hard liquor. Last week there was a recrudescence of the argument about the two countries' Prohibition responsibilities. At Ottawa William D. Euler, Canada's Minister of National Revenue whose blunt speaking on the same subject has riled U. S. officials before (TIME, June 3), lectured the Washington government on ways and means of checking rum-smuggling. Treasury officials in Washington snorted indignantly. Two facts are basic in this international dispute: 1) Canada grants clearance of liquor cargoes for the U. S. on excise...
Fifth Worst Accident's Cause. The cause of aviation's fifth worst heavier-than-air accident, the wreck of the Imperial Airways' City of Ottawa in the English Channel fortnight ago (TIME, July 1), was the splitting of two small connecting rod bolts. An inquiry board decided last week that the bolts were "fatigued," a metallurgical term which means that the crystals of the metal had been strained out of their most useful shape and arrangement, in this case probably by motor vibration. Planemakers took note of the necessity for tireless bolts...
