...week's end, it appeared that they may well have succeeded. With a swivel that jubilant controllers described as "right on the money," the platform brought fading Saturn back onto their TV monitors again. This week they hope to aim the cameras at Phoebe, the planet's outermost moon. Even if the problem recurs, though, it should not spoil the photographic reconnaissance of Uranus or Neptune. The controllers can simply "pan" the cameras by rolling the entire spacecraft with blasts from its small thrusters...
...airport should be less of an ordeal. Although the outermost gates are a mile from the terminals, underground electric monorail cars will whisk people to the planes at 25 m.p.h. Expected to carry 250,000 riders a day, the airport monorail will be the nation's fifth busiest rapid transit system, ranking ahead of San Francisco's BART, which hauls 160,000 passengers daily. Moving sidewalks, computerized baggage handling, and a one-stop security checkpoint equipped with twelve electronic screening devices will also minimize the Hartsfield hassle. By 1985 travelers will be able to reach downtown Atlanta, nine...
...divisions of a new curriculum would be like concentric circles, Rupp said. Biblical Studies would be the innermost circle, with Christianity and Culture the second circle and Comparative Religion the outermost...
Further study of radiation data revealed that besides the fifth and sixth ("E" and "F") Saturnian rings observed a few days before in Pioneer photos, there was an outermost and tenuous seventh ring as much as 960,000 km (600,000 miles) from the planet. Other facts disclosed by Pioneer's telemetry: Saturn, as expected, has a magnetic field. But it is only 700 times stronger than the earth's, a fifth as intense as scientists had expected. Because this field traps particles radiated from the sun, Saturn has radiation belts that Pioneer detected as it neared...
...primitive life forms. Pioneer also radioed data on two other Saturnian satellites (among ten known ones): lapetus, whose puzzling bright side seems to be crusted with ice, and Mimas, a similar icy moon. One surprise: there was far more debris in the wide gap between Saturn's outermost rings than could be seen from earth, but no trace of a fifth ring beyond the four known ones. At week's end the probe swept through this outer region, coming within 21,000 km (13,000 miles) of Saturn's cloud tops in the first rendezvous with that...
