...weirdly sophisticated monologues on security and trust. The plot aims to depict paranoid modernity but misses, venturing off into the surreal as it ticks through comedy, romance, tragedy and documentary. The aesthetic attempts to depict low-class L.A. kitsch (the 1954 sushi joint, Tommy's family home in the outer 'burbs), but lacks many key touches. Especially lacking is the cool, retro music soundtrack one would associate with such a picture--the orchestral back up tunes whine of missed-opportunity. What is strangest is that in spite of all of this, The Alarmist turns out to be a very entertaining...
...suppose I should take comfort in the spectacle of John Glenn rocketing off into outer space, which as a media event is being sold to us as the harbinger of a grand new age of elderly achievement and vitality. Still, for all of Glenn's outsize bravery--and narcissism--I suspect that as a subject of public fascination his flight is really just a more patriotic, sober and expensive variation of The Wedding Singer's rapping granny. It's one of the most unshakable rules of comedy: old people acting hip always get a laugh. And, yes, there is comfort...
...critic Robert Hughes praises Richard Serra's monumental "sculptures" that required "tanker technology" and steel-milled plates [ART, Oct. 19]. If Hughes wants to see large pieces of steel, put him on the subway to the outer reaches of New York harbor, where he can watch ships pass through the Verrazano Narrows. Modern art is the biggest practical joke in history, and Hughes has fallen for it. The true artists are the ironworkers and shipwrights who build today's floating monsters. GARRY JAFFE Chicago...
...doll. The brilliance of this premise will not be appreciated during our lifetime. With just a sprinkling of self-consciousness and heaps of bad taste, director Yu has made a B-movie that can easily stand next to such giants as Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, and Plan 9 From Outer Space. I, for one, saw Chucky the way it was meant to be seen: in an empty theater on a Monday night, with some friends, and a bunch of drunk guys and four-year-olds yelling at the screen. It was the most fun I've had since I came...
Soldier, Warner Brothers' new film starring Kurt Russell, is a futuristic science fiction action movie. What would someone going to the movie expect to see, given this premise? Special effects and outer space settings are pretty likely. So are violence and a romantic twist somewhere in the story. And, as usual, audiences at science fiction movies are ready to set aside notions of realism and plausibility in order to enjoy the film as an entertaining spectacle rather than an intellectual experience. Soldier makes use of most of these assumptions, but in the end turns out to be a disappointing film...
