Critics of daytime talk shows hailed the hefty verdict as a stinging rebuke to trash television. Amedure family attorney Geoffrey Fieger, who made his name defending euthanasia doctor Jack Kevorkian, insisted that it sent a message to "renegade outlaw talk shows" to clean up their act. "If you wish to engage in these types of shows, at least be forthright," he said. "Tell the people what they're going to get involved in, tell them you're going to be talking about lurid, obscene sexual fantasies, and make sure you don't involve mentally ill people who could later strike...

...most familiar organized debate topics is "Should Congress have the power to outlaw physical desecration of the flag?" It was the first question I debated in sixth grade, and remains a presence in almost every tournament at the high school and college level. However, unlike abortion and marijuana legalization, which still provoke heated discussion, the omnipresence of the flag desecration topic provokes stupefied boredom. ...culture has been Balkanized; it is full of niches, with different groups watching and playing their own things. And big movies, the ones that grab $20 million on their first weekend, are guy stuff. Young males consume violent movies, in part, for the same reason they groove to outlaw music: because their parents can't understand it--or stand it. To kids, an R rating for violence is like the Parental Advisory on CDs: a Good Housebreaking Seal of Approval...

Foreign reports on the Littleton tragedy try to make sense of an event almost unthinkable in their own countries by focusing on a culture whose concept of freedom includes the right to buy a rifle in a supermarket. But it's not only Europeans -- and others who outlaw the private ownership of weapons -- who lay the blame at the door of America's uniquely libertarian gun laws. Gun control understandably becomes a mantra for Americans seeking to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy. After all, many societies face problems of youth violence; while it doesn't address the root causes...

...annihilation, hoodlums smuggling things across borders strike most people as an inevitable and tolerable fact of life. But John le Carre, the most artful chronicler of fictionalized cold war espionage (The Spy Who Came in from the Cold; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), takes a less sanguine view of the outlaw capitalism that only intensified after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the breakup of the old world order. Single & Single (Scribner; 347 pages; $26), his 17th novel, provides a fascinating journey through the new landscape of corruption...
