...meeting of the candidates for the University and class basketball teams will be held in the Union next Monday evening, and, from that time on, the Hemenway Gymnasium will be open evenings until 9 o'clock for practice. The outlook for the University team this year is very promising, as most of the material in sight is experienced. Of last year's squad, besides E. S. Allen '09, who is this year's captain, P. Brooks '09, captain of the 1907-08 team, S. Brown '10, G. G. Browne '10, E. S. Currie '09, H. Fish...
...morning of a Yale game. One cannot even be sure that the two captains will play and if they do, it will probably be only for a short period. In many respects it is a novel year. No Yale team ever started a season with a brighter outlook. The material was splendid, mostly veteran players. The 1908 team, however, has suffered more through injuries, first and last, than almost any team on record. On the other hand, no Harvard team in our memory has started the season with a squad of as little real football experience as this...
This does not give, however, a dark outlook for the coming games. The coaches have had material unknown to championship games to experiment with for many of the positions, and changes are likely to be made, especially in the backfield, before long. No especial preparation was made for this particular game, while the Navy apparently put forth, every effort to have their team in the best possible condition for a victory, and they would probably be more than a match for most of the big teams today...
From the present outlook there will be an abundance of material for the end positions. G.G. Browne, Houston, Peirce and Forster of last year's squad will be available, and in addition there will be Cooper, of the second team, and Crowley, Corbett, Rogers, and Harding of the Freshman eleven. Harding played tackle on his eleven last season, but on account of his light weight, he will probably be tried out at end. R.C. Brown, ex-captain of his Freshman team, who was unable to play last fall on account of illness, will probably be able to play next year...
...Yale and intercollegiate meets this year, and R.C. Foster of the Freshman team are better in the longer dash than in the 100-yards. It will take a great deal of hard work to develop enough sprinters to bring the team up to the average in these events. The outlook in the quarter and half-mile runs is brighter. Merrihew and deSelding are closely matched in the former, while Jaques of the Freshman team and Whitcher should again give the University the advantage over Yale in the half-mile. With the exception of Jaques in the mile, there...
