Died. Lieut. General Ross Erastus Rowell (ret.), 62, Marine Corps aviator, credited as originator of dive-bombing tactics; of coronary thrombosis; in San Diego, Calif. During the 1927 Nicaraguan uprising, an outpost of U.S. Marines was surrounded by 600 rebels; Rowell loaded up his De Havilland biplanes with 17-lb. bombs, pinpointed them by diving at the target, routed the enemy.
