...souls to God"-proved too strong. He was ordained, and went to minister to the Tuareg, 900 miles south of Algiers. His parish covered 1,500,000 square miles of the Sahara. His parish house was a small mud hut in Tamanrasset, 400 miles from the nearest French outpost. His daily meal was a miserable date-and-barley stew. Within a year he translated the Gospels into Tamashek, the language of the Tuareg, writing with an ink made from charcoal and camel urine...
Even before the Communists agreed to exchange sick and wounded prisoners, one shrewd Chinese commander near Panmunjom hastened to prove himself a friend of the new Red "humanitarian" line. Early one foggy morning last week, U.S. marines on a western-front outpost heard a surprising announcement over an enemy loudspeaker: "Attention all officers and men. We have one of your wounded. Send two men as soon as possible . . . We will allow you to come as far as the defilade area without firing...
Through their binoculars, the men on the outpost hill spotted a lone figure, clad in long woolen underwear and brown sweater, lying in an old Korean graveyard in no man's land, only 350 yards from the neutral perimeter of Panmunjom. The fiction takes flavor of language and character...
...Persian Gulf, by the shore of the Neutral Zone of Kuwait, lies a battered old World War II LST, a displaced veteran of the invasion of Leyte. For three years it has served as a forward outpost of one of the oil industry's most famous field bosses, James MacPherson, 62, as he hunted for oil ashore. At a cost of $30 million, MacPherson's long-futile quest became the most expensive in Middle East history. After five dry holes, oilmen all over the Middle East joked: "Four more holes will give Mac a nine-hole golf course...
