...AGREE. Jackson and Wallace state outright what Carter merely implies--that America's ills stem from the federal government's attempt to aid the poor and minorities. Wallace speaks to genuine issues such as unemployment and inflation, but in a wholly destructive and superficial manner, diverting the electorate's attention from the roots of these problems in America's social structure. Instead, Wallace chooses to focus his appeal solely on divisive issues such as busing which are only manifestations of much more profound conflicts in American life. Patton says that TM literature replaces God with the phrase "Creative Intelligence," which he claims is a synonym for Hinduism's pantheistic deity. Brooks Alexander, a former TM meditator turned evangelist with the Berkeley group, explains that TM novices are not indoctrinated outright in Hinduism, as they might be in Judaism or Christianity. What gives rise to the "nightmare of affirmative action" is the idea of actually having to go out and recruit women or minorities for jobs not traditionally held by women or minorities. The requirements of affirmative action do not allow employers to claim that women or minorities might have been hired had they applied for the positions...
...Schools in planning a new medical center in Iran is the right decision made for the wrong reason. The faculty made clear at its meeting that it does not want to be responsible for a project whose policies it could not determine, but it failed to condemn Iran's outright police state...
