...Still, Fielding undercuts criticism by employing a bit of self-parody. Recognizing the potential silliness of Bridget's obsession with Colin Firth (Mr. Darcy on TV's "Pride and Prejudice"), the author exaggerates it by giving Bridget an over-the-top interview opportunity with the man himself (part of the in-joke is that Bridget is writing for the Independent, the same newspaper where Bridget herself was created in a spoof column by Fielding). Bridget falling over herself to ask Firth about the diving scene in Pride and Prejudice ("what I mean is did you ever have to take...

...skin seems pasty, her face is gaunt and barely made up, and her famously full, pouty lips appear in need of Blistex. Still, she exudes a misty, undefinable star quality: there's something edgy yet enigmatic in both her appearance and her manner. Jolie's real-life over-the-top intensity and f__-it-all attitude are nearly as unsettling as her screen performances, like the self-destructive fashion model in HBO's 1998 movie Gia and the dangerously seductive mental patient paired with Winona Ryder in Girl, Interrupted. His rage-filled persona is too over-the-top to take seriously (he starts this album growling and barking) and his lyrics, ("Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Nigga!") lack wit. On Party Up, he tries to craft a clubland anthem and fails. It's not much fun partying with a guy who's probably just gonna start a fight and ruin everything. Still, one song, What's My Name?, does have a welcome sense of urgency...

...owners last week banning the latest form of players' celebration--drawing a hand across the throat after stuffing the other team. The offending move, shown by the Packers' Brett Favre (1), among others, is hardly the first. Every few years, the league clamps down on what it considers over-the-top, nasty player displays. Here are a few of the infamous...

...directors who can be said to have a "stable" of actors (including Depp, Jeffrey Jones and Lisa Marie, among others), Burton has made a name for himself through blockbusters that don't look like blockbusters, films that don't smash the audience in with over-the-top special effects, nor bore them with material they've seen a hundred times before. Each of his works has its own cult following--but they all have the same distinct flavor. Just as he adores the monster movies of the '40s and '50s, directors years from now will adore Burton's work...
