Her painting of a spring sale at Henri Bendel's, with ladies squabbling over the merchandise like angry hummingbirds, resembles a Pompeian grotesque translated into the 1920s. ...stars of the evening are Andrew Barth, as Iago and Romeo, and Stephanie Smith as Mercutio and Desdemona. It is tempting to imagine them as Viola and Malvolio or Beatrice and Benedick in some future HRDC production. Barth is wonderfully vicious as Iago, and his Romeo, while predictably over-the-top, retains more grace and wit than the buffoonish comedy demands Smith's comic zeal and exuberance make her the focus of every scene she is in; her Mercutio is delightful, and her Desdemona is as perfect a performance of that sadly banal role as could be imagined...
Wearable? Certainly not. Elegant? Hardly. Mugler's glitzy, over-the-top show was dated before the crowd found its way out of the circus. Modern fashion will never follow a single leader, but if designers, retailers and women have anything to say about it, sanity is here to stay a while-along with a touch of class and maybe a whiff of charm. Mugler served at least one important function: bring in the clowns, the bearded ladies, the acrobats. Recommending a book like American Tabloid--and there is no other book quite like American Tabloid-is most safely done to close friends, whose tastes and tolerances are familiar. Where do they stand on wall-to-wall violence? What is their position on over-the-top sleaze and the reduction of nearly all human conduct to the narrow, insistent lust of self-interest? Pushing such stuff to total strangers could get a person arrested...
...ever. Hutcherson may very well be the greatest talent in the group, but even when soloing he was barely audible above Tyner's majestic accompaniment. Adding to the disjointed feel of the group were Sharpe and Scott, who both have solo styles that can best be described as over-the-top. There is no question that bassist Sharpe has strong fingers, but his rhythmically monotonous solos seem to be rather weak in melodic ideas. On the tune "May Fair," drummer Scott soloed a la John Bonham for almost ten minutes, beating the living daylights...
