...rude truth of the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan was revealed at a lunch the Presidents of both countries attended with 27 U.S. Senators, an event that really did merit a few over-the-top encomiums like "unprecedented" and "brutal." The climax came when Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee asked President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan what the purpose of the U.S. mission was in his country. Karzai filibustered, and Corker told him, in no uncertain terms, that his answer was incomprehensible. At a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing a few days later, Corker confronted Holbrooke about the lack of credibility...

...worry about that," says GOP lobbyist Ed Rogers. Republicans never really left the idea business, but Americans haven't been buying what they're selling, and their product line hasn't changed. They're starting to look like the Federalists of the early 19th century: an embittered, over-the-top, out-of-touch regional party en route to extinction, doubling down on dogma the electorate has already rejected. Our two-party system encourages periodic pendulum swings, but given current trends, it's easy to imagine a third party...

...Many items simply flashed their owners' wealth and influence. An over-the-top sleigh from Düsseldorf (circa 1710) was the must-have vehicle of the day: its design consists almost wholly of mythological figures. An ornate cabinet from Versailles gives a hint of the French King's power, and exquisite cups and vases made of rare materials (obsidian, ostrich egg) would have displayed a collector's refined taste...

...worthwhile adventure, but probably not worth blocking out a regular spot in one's schedule. Unless you are already as rich and pretentious as the target market, not much is to be gained from a visit other than a decent meal and a chance to practice some over-the-top politeness. And of course, the realization that you don't want to be these people in 30 years. Unless...

...wheelchair-bound mother, who is outraged (not very credibly) at her daughter's job on feminist grounds and vows to stop the production. Not a bad idea - turning Mom into a real-life counterpart of a horror-film stalker - but her character (at least in Lusia Strus's over-the-top performance) is too much of a shrieking harridan from the start, and neither Moore nor director Josh Hecht manage to make the farcical revenge plot pay off. But a little reworking might do wonders for this promisingly pulpy play...
