"Basic supplies are in need, accommodation is in need, and of course there's the medical situation," he says. ...Although Manas is "very essential" to U.S. operations in Afghanistan, "we obviously have other options," Air Force General Duncan McNabb, chief of the U.S. Transportation Command, said last December. While most U.S. troops arrive in Afghanistan via Manas, only about 20% of their cargo does; roughly half travels overland through Pakistan, and the rest arrives from the north via rail and truck lines, largely through Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. If the U.S. were to lose Manas, U.S. officials would likely seek a replacement base in the vicinity and explore options in Azerbaijan, Georgia or Uzbekistan. Recently on a sleeper train in China's northwest Xinjiang province, I shared a cabin with two Pakistani traders who were returning home overland from a business trip to Hong Kong. One, in a Harley-Davidson cap, showed me two toy remote-control U.S. military helicopters he had bought in Shenzhen for his young sons. Beaming, he professed his love for America. But he also applauded the Taliban and al-Qaeda and how they "looked after" his Muslim brethren. It's just such a paradoxical pose, at once insular and international, Islamist and secular, that befuddles those outside Pakistan...
