Next up is Desire, Desire, Desire, an overlong and heavyhanded parody of Tennessee Williams that ironically also features the best individual moments. Sandra Shipley slinks about as Blanche DuBois, while James Andreassi as Stanley sits lolling his tongue, shouting "Stella!" every fifteen seconds and occasionally spraying the overheated Blanche with a beer. Funny, but the humor fades long before the actors do. Not even the sudden introduction of Maggie from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, as well as instant parodies of Mamet and Beckett tossed in like ingredients in Ubu's wild bouillabaise, can save it from ennui. Every...

...because I cannot imagine any healthy person wanting to leave. Whether floating across the stage in huge black robes, acting out a patriotic defense of the homeland, or just doing those low Cossack kicks, the dancers rarely lost my normally dance-defying attention. The only inexplicable piece was an overlong sequence in which the dancers pretended they were skating on a Russian ice rink, even executing fake spins. Very impressive. The Ice Capades must not have reached Moscow...

...movie roles, a dusting of philosophy and a big dollop of dancing. Virtually every word of dialogue MacLaine speaks is about herself, and that is just as she intends it: "Philosophically, celebrating myself is what I am into." Apart from her one-liners, there is one highly effective if overlong joke: she sings a Harold Arlen medley while the conductor and orchestra, supposedly influenced by the ghosts of George and Ira Gershwin, for whom the theater is named, keep bursting in with Gershwin themes. MacLaine manages to find a wistful, slightly torchy quality in one unlikely number, If I Only...

...country, the Post got its reputation while inviting controversy. Watergate gave it a success it has since labored to match and an arrogance when challenged that compounds its difficulties. Back in 1978 Alistair Cooke defined the malady: "The Post is suffering from radiation, or smartass, sickness after overlong exposure to Nixon & Co." The result has been some notable missteps, such as a leering and erroneous account of Zbigniew Brzezinski's sexual behavior and a Pulitzer-prizewinning story that proved to be a phony. So when the Carters challenged the bugging item and demanded a retraction, Executive Editor Ben Bradlee...
