...Then again, Iraq's abrupt termination of talks with Richard Butler suggests that Saddam may be preparing to again suspend cooperation with the U.N. weapons inspectors. And that could be Washington's best hope: "If the Iraqis overplay their hand and get belligerent, that could provoke the Security Council into continuing sanctions," says Waller. Indeed, without Saddam Hussein's legendary capacity for overreaction, sanctions might already have been history...

...might wonder where the emotional supernovas are in from the choirgirl hotel. Boys for Pele had the mesmerizing "Caught a Lite Sneeze;" Under the Pink contained the scandalous "God;" and of course, Little Earthquakes remains a virtual apocalypse of emotion, despite the recent trends of radio stations to overplay "Silent All These Years." Is Tori Amos finally starting to make peace with the demons that drove her to create painfully honest pieces such as Earthquake's "Me and a Gun," which was based on her experience with rape? Contrasting Bridges' cavalier attitude is John Goodman as his bowling buddy Walter, who gets worked up about everything. The Coen brothers get plenty of good comic material out of this pair and thankfully don't overplay the "odd couple" element. Walter is a uniquely funny character too: though he obviously has a good heart, he can't stop his over-the-top rants. Several elements of the story suggest that the cause of their pain might be the social climate of the decade. Lee's portrayal of the 1970s is scarily realistic. He doesn't overplay period detail: the furniture is slightly tacky, the shirt lapels are wider, and Kevin Kline's sideburns come halfway down to his chin, but none of this changes the ageless, affluent suburban setting. The film lets the audience laugh at the decade, but there are disturbing undertones to even the funniest scenes...
