With a bit a cheating, one or more powers could overrun and withstand attack from the others. This would return us to the dark ages of the Cold War when Presidents Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower used or considered using nuclear weapons to decimate portions of the world population. In other words, threats by irrational dictators or other third parties could easily overwhelm a treaty between the U.S. and the USSR, returning the two nations to the frightening doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction...
...then the Amal movement, led by the urbane Shi'ite lawyer Nabih Berri, passionately shared the Israeli goal of driving the P.L.O. from southern Lebanon. The well-funded and heavily armed P.L.O. fighters had overrun large parts of southern Lebanon and Beirut, and the Shi'ites were the principal victims of their arbitrary power. The Israeli expulsion of the P.L.O., together with the crushing of its Sunni Muslim allies, created a power vacuum that was quickly filled by the emergent Shi'ites, who have little interest in seeing the Palestinians return...
...superpowers. Tibet was stormed by the Chinese, and now the dreamed-of Shangri- La is vanished forever; Cambodia was caught in a cross fire, and an earthly paradise so gentle that ricksha drivers were said to tip their passengers is now a land of skulls; Afghanistan was overrun by Soviet tanks, and now a book of photographs remembering its fugitive beauties is subtitled, mournfully, Paradise Lost. On a goalline galumph, rotund Rookie William ("Refrigerator") Perry beat the bookies' 12- to-1 odds by scoring a Bear touchdown; against all expectations, Walter ("Sweetness") Payton was shut out. For stripping two fumbles, Chicago Defensive End Richard Dent added...
...Thursday the chant "Down with Duvalier!" was echoing across the country. Said one resident of Cap Haitien: "No one is afraid anymore. Duvalier must go." In Gonaives, thousands of protesters blocked the streets with barricades and burning tires. When the local army headquarters was overrun by anti-Duvalier marchers, agents of the Tonton Macoute tried to open fire, but they were disarmed by an army tactical battalion. Terrified, the agents ripped off their trademark blue denim uniforms and tried to escape the mob's wrath. More crowds demanded that the military overthrow the dictatorship, and rumors started that Baby...
