...society relies on its newspapers to check powerful individuals and institutions. An administration-controlled student paper poses the same threat to an academic community that a state-controlled press would to a nation; oversight limits the press’ ability to act as a watchdog and prevent misuse of authority. The USC administration’s interference with the student press creates a chilling effect, forcing student journalists to weigh the risk of losing their jobs against the duty of writing a story about or questioning the administration. Such considerations hamper a paper’s ability...
...counsel Vince Foster by shooting at what he called a "head-like thing" (later widely reported to be a melon) in his backyard--issued 1,089 such unilateral subpoenas in six years. Since a Republican entered the White House, the G.O.P. Congress has been far less enthusiastic in its oversight. Waxman likes to point out that the House took 140 hours of sworn testimony to get to the bottom of whether Clinton had misused the White House Christmas-card list for political purposes, but only 12 hours on prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib...

In the case of February's remake of The Pink Panther, studio chief Amy Pascal ordered reshoots and re-edits to the director's cut that made Steve Martin's Inspector Clouseau less lascivious and more laughable. The comedy earned a PG rating, a wider audience...

Currently, only 20 percent of the 13 grants handed out every weekend are checked against receipts. The UC allocates nine $100 regular party grants and four $200 “super-party” grants each week. The legislation comes in response to increased criticism of the UC’s party fund and worry within the UC that grants are being misused. Earlier this month, students who showed...
