Ever since Muslim fundamentalists assassinated President Anwar Sadat in 1981, Egyptian authorities have been jittery about a resurgence of Islamic extremism. Last week their vigilance paid off. Four junior army officers and 29 civilians were indicted on charges that they planned to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak in a "holy war." The government said some of the plotters, who were arrested last April, were allegedly linked to the fundamentalist group responsible for killing Sadat...

...parties to this alleged scheme, including Khashoggi, Saudi officials and the CIA, deny this was done. Any CIA effort to enlist the Saudis in support of the contras would have violated the Boland Amendment, originally passed by Congress in 1982 to stop the use of any U.S. funds to overthrow the government of Nicaragua, and tightened in 1984 to prevent the Administration from using any other country to provide military help to the contras. Sunni Iraqis have feared Persian domination since before there was an Iraq. That fear reached fever pitch after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. Sunni politicians regularly call their Shi'ite rivals tools of Tehran. If Iraq's Shi'ite leaders want the Sunnis to end their insurgency, they'll have to seriously distance themselves from the mullahs next door. With her kapa kuiki laden with royal insignia, Hawaiian Gussie Bento too unstitches the spread of colonization. To protest the overthrow of their monarchy in the late 19th century, Hawaiian women quilted native flags, which they hung over their beds. These days, quilters like Bento might colonize contemporary art spaces, but they're still staging their revolutions from within...

...much of the time since the overthrow of President Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, Mogadishu and much of Somalia has been ruled by clan-based warlords who laid waste the country and turned Mogadishu into an anarchic, continuous battlefield. More than 100,000 people died in the fighting in 1991-92, and when the U.N. launched a massive relief operation in April 1992, the U.S. was drawn into the conflict - at first guarding the relief, then delivering it, then attacking the warlords that were stealing it. In October 1993, in events depicted in the film Black Hawk Down, Somali militiamen...
