Call that the not-so-new sentimentality. But call Ryder's performance as Kaysen first rate. She moves very persuasively from puzzled, rather passive resentment over her incarceration to a lively awareness of her problems to, finally, edgy mental health. Jolie is more problematic as her best friend, an overt rebel whose assertiveness leads to the movie's most tragic--and heavily fictionalized--passage. There is something tiresome in her toughness. But that's emblematic of the whole movie, which misses what was most engaging about Kaysen's memoir--the unique sound of her voice, mostly drowned out here...
...Although he has alarmed the country's traditional elites as well as foreign investors with his left-leaning policies and his overt admiration for Cuba's President Fidel Castro, Chavez last week received a ringing endorsement from his electorate when 72 percent of voters supported his new constitution in a referendum. The constitution entrenches the president's power and allows him to potentially remain in office until 2012. It also affirms state ownership of Venezuela's oil industry, which Chavez hopes will fuel his "new economy" that redistributes wealth among the poor. While the flood is a win-win scenario...
...Sadly, the crowd's overt apathy extended unfairly to the opening band, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. The band's Welsh nature and English pop sensibilities (crafted in the tradition of late-'60s Beatles or Beach Boys) were mostly lost on a polite but uninterested audience. Touring in support of their latest release Spanish Dance Troupe, the band played their heart out. Highlights included the raucous "Poodle Rockin'" and an acoustic interlude, complete with the soothing violin of Megan Childs. The band put on a good, energetic show, and it was sad to see the chilly reception for most...
...legal drinking age in Kentucky, younger troops--like the 18-year-old Glover--downed many beers that night. A staff sergeant on duty in the barracks did nothing to halt the illegal drinking. Glover and Winchell kept away from each other, one soldier said, and there was no overt hostility between them. As midnight drew closer, the keg dribbled dry. Glover began whacking the empty aluminum cask with the Wiffle-ball...
...really, George, call me Steve.... During their first real debate Monday night in Phoenix, the GOP presidential hopefuls came across like salesmen at a convention competing for their boss's attention but avoiding any overt aggression. In broad agreement on issues of taxes and foreign policy, they even kept their criticisms of one another plausibly constructive, and that left the audience once again to make their choice on the basis of style...
