...idea was to bring the warring parties in Bosnia closer together, and with some overt stage management, the U.S. accomplished it--literally. When the foreign ministers of Bosnia, Croatia and Serb-led Yugoslavia arrived at the American mission in Geneva last Friday, they were ushered into a modest conference room and seated at a small round table that was purposely chosen by the Americans for the intimacy it would create. Things were so cramped that the ministers and their hosts sat almost knee to knee. After seven hours, they emerged with a one-page agreement on basic principles that...

...fact, even McCarty's modest private effort implicates the government in overt racial discrimination in several ways. It will be administered by a state university. The business contri bu tions presumably will be tax-de ductible. Above all, the Oseola McCarty Scholarship Fund--and in deed all private, so-called voluntary affirmative action--causes the govern ment to be racially biased in its po l icy toward private discrimination. The government would quickly step in to stop even a sweet old lady from setting up a whites-only scholarship fund. That would clearly violate about 18 laws, including...

...jaded, stupid and self-serving. Remember, film critics actually liked that piece of sewage Pulp Fiction. I saw the movie Waterworld [SHOW BUSINESS, July 31], and it was great fun! The hero was intelligent, the characters interesting and the special effects dazzling. There was no filthy language and no overt sex, and good triumphed over evil. ...hated the school, she confided in us, hated the fact that as a Radcliffe woman, she was treated as what she termed a "second-class citizen," suffering snubs--and, at times, overt hostility--from male professors indignant at the female students who invaded their classes. She recounted one particular incident, drawing out the details with grim satisfaction--she had written a short story, and her professor had told her that, while her work was strong and she was obviously quite talented, she was wasting time better spent looking for a husband. The result was that...

These savagely inaccurate observations don't measure up to the overt pretentiousness that fills up this book review. Hagar not only had problems with the "old people" at the reading as well as Will Self's choice of beverage, but apparently she assumes one must possess some sort of British "roaring boy" background to fully comprehend Amis' work: "Amis hasn't made any waves on this side of the Atlantic...At Oxford, Amis is a normal topic of discussion." That statement is a firm justification for doing away with those semester-abroad programs. The pompous and presumptuous Hagar had just...
