...also recalls that, in a household of overwrought women, he was often left alone as a small boy to play with forbidden toys: sharp umbrella spokes and matches from the kitchen, pins and needles from the sewing box, mirrors and broken glass from a chandelier. These perilous playthings metamorphosed themselves in his mind into icons against the savage man-made destruction outside. Today Lucas Samaras continues to craft them into prickly, disturbing drawings and assemblages. They suggest that pain and anguish lurk in the commonest household object, yet at the same time they glitter with a prideful...

Aretha's father, the Rev. C. L. Franklin, was?and is?pastor of Detroit's 4,500-member New Bethel Baptist Church, where the preaching is so fiery that two white-uniformed nurses stand by to aid overwrought parishioners. Franklin commands up to $4,000 per appearance as a barnstorming evangelist, has recorded 70 steadily selling LPs of his sermons. He may not be a member of the Baptist Ministers Conference, but his Cadillac, diamond stickpins and $60 alligator shoes testify to an eminently successful pastorate. EVERY CRITIC has a position on Updike's style. It is "stale garlic" to Norman Mailer, "angel tongued" to most newspaper reviewers, "sometimes excessive" to Time magazine. Perhaps Updike's prose is overwrought and given to excess, to showing off. But it is in their excesses, as Updike once said of J. D. Salinger, that "artists become adventurers for us all." And it is, at least upon most occasions, an excess of love...

...least two whites were deliberately killed by Negroes overwrought by the assassination of King. In Minneapolis, John F. Murray, 25, was shot three times in the head, reportedly by a man who lives in Murray's housing project. Police charged unemployed Factory Hand Clarence C. Underwood with the killing and said he dropped a gun when accosted and cried: "Shoot me-Martin Luther King is dead!" In the Virgin Islands, Contractor Roger D. McKibbin Jr. was knifed to death at a drive-in ice-cream store while his three young children watched. Police arrested Michael Raymond Crowe...
