...that of other mammals. The eggs of dogs, which are needed to grow the resulting clone (in this case, a cell from the ear of an adult Afghan hound was the genesis of the cloned puppy) do not mature in the ovary, but instead finish their development in the oviduct. It's much easier for scientists to obtain eggs from the ovary than from the oviduct. Many researchers have tried, but failed to get the timing right to get the most mature eggs...

Normally a woman of childbearing age ovulates once every lunar month, an average of 14 days before the expected onset of menstruation. Her ovaries then expel one or more egg cells, ripe for fertilization. An individual egg (ovum) is drawn into the fallopian tube (oviduct) to begin a four-day journey toward the uterus. After intercourse, the husband's spermatozoa swim upstream through the uterus into the fallopian tubes, and if one sperm succeeds in penetrating an ovum, conception has occurred. The conceptus, repeatedly doubling the number of its cells, enters the uterus and imbeds itself in the lining...

Oddly, the two most familiar of Dr. Speert's great names are among the earliest and latest: Gabriele Falloppio (circa 1523-62), who vividly described the oviduct as uteri tuba, or trumpet of the uterus, and George Nicholas Papanicolaou, 75, whose technique for detecting early cancer by smearing vaginal secretions on glass slides for microscopic study of cells has become, since 1943, standard procedure in thousands of doctors' offices...

...birth to full maturity.* The platyfish, not an egg-layer, bears live young. To make sure that their baby platyfish got a germ-free start, the researchers bathed the mother fish in alcohol, ether and iodine, made a Caesarean incision and gently sucked the young out of the germless oviduct with a rubber bulb, taking care not to rupture the germ-packed intestines. Then they popped the baby fishes into warm, sterile water, later transferred them to sterile, stoppered milk bottles...

...little carp-like fish which costs only 30?. Within 24 hours after a female bitterling is placed in a quart of fresh water, which also contains two teaspoonfuls of urine from a pregnant woman, there grows out from the belly of the bitterling a long tubular appendage, called an oviduct, through which in the ordinary course of nature she would expel her own eggs. As soon as one pregnancy test is over, the bitterling may be returned to an aquarium of fresh water where she quickly recovers her form and is again ready to serve curious womankind...
