Soft Terrain. Earth Shoes owe their appearance in the U.S. to Jacobs' wife Eleanor, who first came across them in a small Copenhagen shop. "I tried them on and immediately my sore back felt better," she says. That discovery led the Jacobses to track down the shoe's designer, Anne KalsØ, a yoga teacher who had for years observed the effects of shoes on posture. On a trip to South America she confirmed a favorite theory: lower heels mean better carriage. The Brazilian Indians, she decided, owed their erect stance to long years of sinking barefoot heels...
...trouble getting in because those were the days when there was a numerus clausus on Jews," he recalls now. "It left a strong impression on me which I don't intend to forget and hope I never forget, because that's why I feel I owe it to blacks and Puerto Ricans and Chicanos to support them." The movie, coarse and hammer hard, follows the cops as they bust up an underworld kidnaping ring and avenge the death of a squad member. Director Philip d'Antoni, who produced Bullitt and The French Connection, has cut The Seven-Ups to pattern. The chase scene measures up just fine against its predecessors...

Its citizens recognize that they owe much of their high standard of living-second only to the U.S.-to the expansion of industry that has been made possible by foreign capital. Indeed, the country urgently needs more foreign investment to create jobs for its growing work force; the Canadian gross national product is rising 7% this year, but the unemployment rate is 6%. The new law is designed not to keep out foreign capital but to make sure that it comes in on Canada's terms...
