...much truth is in that picture? Leathery-faced Philip Bancroft, well-hated member of the executive committee of California's Associated Farmers and a fluent hater of John Steinbeck, says, "About as much as there was in Prohibition beer." Owlish, bespectacled California Commissioner of Immigration and Housing Carey McWilliams, who enrages growers by plumping for collective farms to solve California's farm problem, says, "It was true two years ago, is not so true...

Because the picture deals with everyday U. S. types, casting was all-important. Key character was Ma Joad (Jane Darwell). If she was wrong, the picture could never be in focus. She is magnificent. Russell Simpson is owlish Pa Joad. He is also a million men who plough, seed and harvest U. S. farms. Only star used was Henry Fonda (Tom Joad). For him the part was a throwback to one of his best roles, the young lineman in Slim. Others like John Carradine, Charley Grapewin, Zeffie Tilbury, John Qualen, Eddie Quillan, Frank Darien have played minor roles in pictures...

In the same Letter last week Economist Roberts also published the nine-month earnings figures of his selected 320 corporations-a far better gauge than last quarter reports of how much real prosperity, ex-war-boom, U. S. business has achieved. By industrial groups these nine month earnings showed...

...Senate's dean on Foreign Affairs. Seated nearby also were "Dear Alben" Barkley, the loyal but bemused Senate Majority Leader; Secretary of State Hull; Chairman Key Pittman of the Foreign Relations Committee, White House Secretary Steve Early. Slowly revolving a cigar between pursed lips, looking more than ever owlish, Vice President "Cactus Jack" Garner was also there...
