Cornelis Bernardus van Niel, 87, pioneering Dutch-born microbiologist who in the 1930s formulated the first correct chemical theory of photosynthesis, the all important process by which green plants convert water, carbon dioxide and light energy into carbohydrates and oxygen; in Carmel, Calif. ...usual macho character and coolness in all situations. But the best acting in the movie definitely comes from John Lithgow '70, who portrays Walter Curnow, an engineer who is totally out of his element in a spacesuit. Playing the paranoid role, Lithgow at one point fumbles hilariously with the oxygen mixture controls on his spacesuit and floats helplessly in space hiccuping uncontrollably...
